die:mischbatterie, the personal studio of German mixer and producer Stephan Zeh, has undergone a refit, based around a vintage Neve desk.
The refurbishment, which took about two years, with pauses due to lock out bookings, also saw around 200 meters of Van Damme Blue Series multicore 8, 12 and 16 pair installed by Vienna-based Avitech.
Zeh explains: “We restored a vintage Neve 8068, customised it, did a new patch and altered the internal wiring. In the process of finishing the desk and exchanging the desk in the control room we had to redo the whole infrastructure of the studio. This has been done exclusively with Van Damme multi cores.”
The studio also features an extensive roster of analogue outboard gear as well as a collection of vintage microphones. The outboard racks house preamps, compressors and EQs from Neve, API, Urei and Chandler, among others, while Empirical Labs distressors sit alongside a Bettermaker EQ 232 and Tube-Tech processors. Zeh also opted for Barefoot MM27 monitorss and large ATC speakers.
Zeh concludes: “We chose Van Damme because it is excellent to work with and, in comparison to a German competitor, we liked the sound more. We’re very happy with the outcome.”
