Established in October 1987, VDC Trading is celebrating 30 years in business.
Starting from somewhat humble beginnings in east London and funded by a £5k bank loan in the days when collateral wasn’t usually discussed, VDC was ‘fortunate’ for the climate of Thatcher’s Britain at the time so they spent most of the loan on a Greek holiday and two cars leaving the princely sum of £128 to get things going…!
Their first order was for 36 microphone stands for DNA, the Eurhythmics’ Church studio in Crouch End North London. This brought in a whopping 50p profit per stand and VDC was off the blocks…!
Since those naive and inexperienced days VDC has gone on to work with some of the biggest names across the touring, recording, performing, installation and broadcast markets in the world.
Niall J. Holden, founder and CEO, explains: “We’ve come a long way since our first ‘office’ which was a tiny spare bedroom in a tower block in Hackney. VDC grew quickly focusing with a passion on the quality, design and flexibility of the products. By just saying yes to impossible enquiries (as cable is quite often overlooked to the last minute) we established our ‘can do’ attitude early on. The quality of what we supply has always been absolutely critical, people don’t suffer poor quality and as cable is such a critical link much can go wrong. Investing in talented staff who really understand and are passionate about the industry is also vital.
As things really took off it was a heady mix of stress, hard work and excitement but incredibly rewarding to see the business taking shape.
We’ve been extremely fortunate to work with some great companies and prestigious projects over the past three decades – from Abbey Road to the London Olympics to Sky to Aston Martin to the BBC to the Gold & Diamond Jubilee to Coldplay to name but a few.
As we serve many markets we are able to get involved with very diverse projects from endoscope cabling to cable for the Euro Fighter to refrigeration and we look forward to that continuing for many years to come.
