Budapest audio visual events company GEM Kft. turned to VDC Trading for their implementation of a change to optical cabling for the annual spectacle The Great Race which took place in Budapest on the 1st May. Featuring Race cars, motorbikes and trucks racing in the heart of Budapest and an air race along the Danube, The Great Race is a fantastic and spectacular event for the spectators and has the explicit aim of bringing Motorsport closer to the people.
GEM’s Technical Manager Krisztian Pinter explained the change: “We decided to use optical cable from VDC Trading, both for the Sound (Ethersound protocol) and SDI/HDMI video signals. We chose the optical system because, during this event especially, the signal needs to run for long distances in the city. For the Great Race event we used a 1000 metre OpticalCon Quad cable and 4 x 300m and 6 x 250m Van Damme Tourlight quad cables. We have since added more Tourlight cables in readiness for the next big event.”
Split across the Danube, it’s a city of two halves – Buda and Pest. The iconic backdrop of the Neogothic Parliament building on the Pest side of the river offers fans a stunning panoramic view of the race action. On the Buda side of the city, you’ll find the Statue of Liberty, on top of Gellért Hill, along with the Citadel.
Budapest attracts over 20 million visitors a year, making it one of the top destinations in Europe and is regularly featured in the Top 10 list of World’s Best Cities. The Great Race event has become a tradition in the Hungarian capital, allowing fans to get closer to the race cars, motorbikes, trucks and drivers than they ever could in a closed circuit.
