Four times Latin Grammy nominated Producer and mixer Andy Bradfield has completed a complete upgrade of his studio in London’s Parsons Green which he calls Studio A. In recent years Andy has carved a remarkable niche being the ‘go to guy’ for both high end pop and rock acts as well as crossover acts and movie & gaming soundtracks.
Having begun his career at the legendary Olympic and Townhouse studios, it made sense for Andy to turn to ex Olympic Maintenance Engineer Paul Wilkes for the installation of the upgrade.
He explained: “Paul did a great job and recommended we used Van Damme blue series cable almost exclusively because of its reliability and suppleness when running it around corners and tight turns. The studio is based around a Pro Tools HDX system with Xmon software and I use an Icon 24 mixing surface which suits me and the way I work. Originally the Icon was hardwired for mixing only, but we added a patch bay, set up in the traditional way, so that I can introduce outboard like say, Neve pre-amps, and outboard compressors as I want. In other words it turned into a major project to turn the studio into a world class facility.”
The main control room is approx. 6 metres x 6 metres, now includes tie lines to the recording area, enabling Andy to connect a visiting laptop or other device to the desk. With stereo and surround capabilities and the 72 io Pro Tools system as well as 8 x 8 way connections in & out of the X-mon monitoring system, which handles all the speaker & monitor configurations, the connections involved over 250 metres of Van Damme Blue Series 24 way multicore as well as 50 meters of 2 way.
Andy added: “All the connectors, cable and assemblies were supplied by VDC Trading who I am pleased to say were great, really on the case.”
Andy has a very diverse range of successful projects, and splits his time between making records and mixing movie sound tracks, both in 5.1 & stereo as the projects dictate.
Andy has seen his career take him to a variety of successful projects – ranging from Records and Film to TV, stage and albums, culminating in him mixing both songs and score in 5:1 and Stereo for the soundtrack for legendary filmmaker Baz Luhrmans ‘The Great Gatsby’ featuring music from The XX, Lana Del Ray, Sia, Bryan Ferry and many others. He mixed the music score and soundtrack for Blockbuster computer game ‘Halo 4’ – composed by Massive Attack’s Neil Davidge – and the new stage adaptation of ‘’King Kong’ with longtime collaborator Marius De Vries which debuted in Melbourne to rave reviews and is now heading to Broadway, and mixed Craig Armstrong’s score for ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’, and Lucas film ‘Strange Magic’
Bradfield has also been prolific on the Artist front mixing new albums for Craig Armstrong, Maria Mena (Sony), Above & Beyond (Acoustic Album), Lo-Fi Fnk, Mutine, and singles for ‘Nathan Carter’ and ‘Desree’ and continued his long standing relationship with Spanish super star Miguel Bose (Warner Spain) which saw him receive another Latin Grammy nomination for mixing Miguel’s album ‘Papitwo’ – taking Andy’s Latin Grammy nominations to 4! As well as having previously being Grammy nominated for work with Robbie Robertson.
