One of Austria’s leading recording studio complexes – Prime Studios – tucked away in Mils near Innsbruck, has added a third control room, C , and a fourth live area to house its latest addition; a classic EMI TG12345 MkIV console, built originally for Abbey Road Studios. One of only two in the world, the console’s twin is believed to be owned by producer Mike Hedges. Prime Studios opened in 2008 and is favoured by such producers and engineers as Chuck Ainlay, George Massenburg, Christian Seitz and Alfons Weindorf.
Studio C is acoustically separated from the main building and features a customised 5.1 surround reference sound system by Surrountec. What’s so exciting here however is that the bespoke cable solution for the new installation was designed and built using VDC Trading’s YouSpec application.
The cabling included Van Damme Blue Series Studio Grade 48 and 24 pair multicore cables in made-to-order lengths, terminated with Neutrik and EDAC 90 pin connectors. VDC manufactuted the solution in London and then sent the completed order to Prime Studios by international courier for simple installation on site.
Prime studios’ Gerhard Buchbauer commented
The YouSpec application from VDC is more than handy making it easy to choose the exact cable type needed. We have chosen the Van Damme Blue Series Studio Grade for Control C. It is more than great to have the ability to choose pin wiring and to even completely customise the wiring for the cables online.
YouSpec is a relatively new and unique application on the VDC website but has already proved to be a “game-changer” for clients, as can be seen in this high-profile case. It allows web visitors to design, specify, price-up and order completely bespoke cable solutions – 24 hours a day, every day. From simple audio leads to complex stage-box to tails and multi-core loom configurations.
The YouSpec functionality is an integral part of the VDC Trading website and is accessible from the desktop but is also designed to support mobile working via tablet computers. Niall Holden, VDC’s CEO said
Using YouSpec, our customers can specify the Van Damme cable, the colour, the exact length, the connectors, the connector boots, the labelling and so on required and VDC will manufacture their design and ship it directly to them. As we have already seen, this is invaluable to clients – not just those who are overseas and in different time zones – but all those working remotely onsite or outside of standard business hours.
